Specifying a Geocell

0
Geocellular confinement systems come in a variety of cell sizes and cell depths, which are used to fulfill the specific needs of applications. Factors such as soil strength, expected applied loads, and surface type are all important to understand to properly specify the right cellular confinement product. Geo Products' EnviroGrid line is manufactured in a range of sizes, depths and strengths to meet these application and site-specific challenges. For example, for applications with concentrated loads at specific points, such as vehicle-supporting applications, smaller cell sizes are generally desired to ensure proper weight distribution. For erosion control or earth retention, larger cell sizes may be used given various factors such as slope geometry and confinement requirements. View our EnviroGrid specifications online and contact us with questions on gettingn the right product for your site. Learn more here.;

D35 Revises D5617 for Multi-Axial Tension Test for Geosynthetics

0
ASTM Committee D35 on Geosynthetics has reapproved D5617, "Standard Test Method for Multi-Axial Tension Test for Geosynthetics," as D5617-04(2010). Installed geosynthetics are subjected to forces from more than one direction including forces perpendicular to the surfaces of the geosynthetic. Out of plane deformation of a geosynthetic may be useful in evaluating materials for caps where subsidence of the subsoil may be problematic. Learn more here.;

New Edition of Designing with Geosynthetics Is Not Only for Academics

Since 1977, the time of the first geosynthetics conference in Paris, geosynthetics have emerged as exciting engineering materials in a wide array of civil engineering applications, e.g., transportation, geotechnical, geoenvironmental, hydraulics, and private development. To provide a deeper understanding of this subject matter, author Robert M. Koerner presents Designing with Geosynthetics - 6th Edition, which contains two volumes, released through Xlibris.

Program removes barriers for fish by implementing arches

0
One often doesn't think of fish when an oil and gas company is mentioned but the people at BP Canada Energy are doing their part for the continued welfare of aquatic dwellers in the region. BP, working in conjunction with Alberta Environment and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, have been replacing road culverts over streams with fish arches on their access roads. The program, which employs geotextile-reinforced soil structure technology for stream crossings on resource roads, is a state-of-the-art process that strengthens the streambed and removes barriers for fish--barriers that had been created by the culverts. Updating Specs: An Introduction from GMA

0
Andrew Aho, Executive Director of the Geosynthetic Materials Association (GMA), writes: "Geotextile manufacturers are keen to update the specifying community regarding specifications that are outdated and no longer acceptable in the industry. Two tests retired by industry approval standards continue to creep into the occasional specification: the Mullen Burst Test and the Puncture Strength Test. The Mullen test was devised in 1887 by J.W. Mullen as a measure for the puncture strength of paper. Eventually it was adopted by the textile industry along with the Puncture Strength Text. In the 1970s these tests were available to the geotextile industry." Read more, including an open letter to specifiers of geosynthetics.
