FEMA: Geotextiles in Erosion Control and Embankment

0
In April 2009, the State of Arkansas experienced severe storms and flooding, affecting 37 counties and causing damage to infrastructures. This resulted in the 16 June 2009, presidential disaster declaration, DR-184, for Public Assistance. In Lafayette County alone, four roads were washed out, necessitating repairs and mitigation. A specialist recommended using a geotextile to stabilize the embankment and make the road more resilient once repairs were completed. Read more.

Fighting Earthquake Damage with Geotextile

0
The European Union partially funds POLYTECT (Polyfunctional Technical Textiles against Natural Hazards) to find technical textiles made with carbon and glass fibers to stabilize structures damaged by earthquakes, landslides or other natural disasters. The POLYTECT researchers are integrating fiber optic cables into geotextiles and 3D rope-like textiles, giving engineers the potential to detect temperature changes, humidity, stiffness or chemicals in building structures, as well as pass light and information back along the sensors to find out whether soil is moving. The $500 million question: Why repairing our levees keeps costing more

0
Updating flood maps in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, FEMA announced in 2007 that the five Metro East levees protecting the area since the 1940s were no longer adequate. Repairing the levees, county officials were told, would cost $120 million to $180 million. To meet the price tag, officials in Madison, Monroe and St. Clair counties set up an agency - the Southwestern Illinois Flood Prevention District Council - and a new sales tax to fund the project. But two years later, the estimates have soared. According to the Army Corps of Engineers, the price tag could range from $300 million to $500 million. Learn more here.;

Bridge Abutment Repair with Geotextile

In Colwood, British Columbia--on Victoria Island--wave action is washing fill out from beneath the pavement at the Esquimalt Lagoon bridge. To address that problem, the City will place timbers at the base of the abutments to protect them from waves. On the north side, a section of the asphalt will be removed and fill material excavated out. That area will then be repacked and the sides reinforced with geotextile to prevent fill material from being drawn out. Learn more here.;
