TriAx Puts Cape Town's World Cup Stadium on Firm Footing

Tensar International's TriAx geogrid has been successfully installed by South African World Cup 2010 contractors to overcome poor load-bearing ground encountered on the new Green Point Stadium in Cape Town. Construction of the stadium, which will play host to a World Cup semi-final in July, was made problematic by the highly variable soil inherent to this spectacular ocean-side setting at the southern tip of the continent. Geosynthetic CQA Courses Return to Australia

In May, TRI Geosynthetics Services will offer more Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) Training courses and affiliated certification in Australia. The group last provided these essential professional development and business-improving events in November 2010. The new courses will be delivered on May 9 and 13 in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales to bookend the events of the Waste 2011 Conference (10-12 May 2011, Coffs Harbour). Learn more.

ASTM Unveils Updated Website

ASTM International has relaunched its website with nice new look. One of the most-welcomed additions to the update is a new navigation bar arrangement. With the vast amount of sectors ASTM's consensus-oriented standards committees are involved in--including our favorite, Committee D35 on Geosynthetics--the cleaner navigation tool is welcomed. Also of note, rotating news stories have been added to the front page, the site search tool has been improved, and the "My Committees" page has been streamlined. Levee Work to Get Geotextiles

After considerable trouble with erosion and levee stability south of Marrero (Louisiana), the West Bank Levee Board has formed an agreement with the US Army Corps of Engineers to shore up the oft-crumbling levee with geotextiles. Roughly 1,600 feet of the earthen levee has been threatened, with two failures having occurred in the last 20 years and which affected 600 feet of the structure. Geotextiles will be used now and the levee will be raised from 10 feet to 14.5 feet to guard against a 100-year storm. Learn more here.;

Landslides Threaten 50,000 in Chittagong

In Chittagong, Bangladesh, it's estimated that 50,000 residents are under threat of landslides. Development and hillside stripping has gone on largely unchecked and has de-stabilized large sections of the hills ahead of the rainy season. The University of Washington and CH2M Hill-developed Greenroads evaluation system has been released in version 1.0. The mix of voluntary and required credits for road construction categories, such as "Construction Activities" and "Materials and Resources," provides a certification-ready system for promoting road building that exceeds common practice in areas of sustainability.
