Managing Washington State's Growth

0
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is developing new roads to improve access for residents who live near I-5 in the fast-growing zone along the Washington-Oregon border. As Associated Construction Publications (ACP) reports, the region is transitioning from rural to suburban infrastructures, populations and traffic volumes. But developers and officials want to keep the wilder appearance of the area, so they are using interesting drainage technologies for site runoff. Holding ponds release across geogrid slopes with tree branch cover. As the water flows through, it interacts with the brush as in a wetland. Eventually, it reaches a creek. Learn more here.;

The Scout Moor Wind Farm

0
The Scout Moor Wind Farm is situated in Northwest England in the West Pennine Moors of Lancashire. It is the largest on-shore wind farm in England, producing enough energy (154,000 MW-h/yr) for 40,000 homes. Like many wind farms, the space and weather conditions are ideal for harvesting wind power; but access to the site and establishing firm turbine footings is a challenge. In the case of the 65MW, 26-turbine Scout Moor farm, it was constructed upon 1,347 acres (545 ha) of an extensive peat bog. Read about its stabilization with NAUE geogrids.

GSI White Paper #26 Addresses Quality Management

0
The Geosynthetic Institute (GSI) has released its White Paper #26: "Need for and Justification of Quality Management Systems for Successful Geosynthetic Performance." In it, the Institute notes that despite 30+ years of literature documenting the great many successes with geosynthetics, three areas still have experienced types of failures that may "set the stage for the justification of quality management systems." These areas: holes in geomembranes, geotextile filter failures, and MSE wall failures.

Yamba is a small coastal community on the northern beaches of New South Wales (NSW), Australia. and is known as the "Jewel in the Crown" for Clarence Valley Council, a point which was reinforced when it won "The Best Town in Australia" in 2009. In early 2012, undermining in the southeast corner of Whiting Beach was exposing key infrastructure, including the footpath, road, stormwater pipe work and chamber, pressurized sewer and a car park. ELCOROCK® Geotextile Sand Containers were seen as an ideal solution to fit these criteria and were adopted after consultation with Geofabrics Australasia, Fisheries and Crown Land.
