APWA's Sustainability Mission

Over the past few years, the American Public Works Association (APWA) has spearheaded a new sustainability vision for the public works management field. Two key investments have been made and show great promise for the future: APWA launched a smaller, sustainability-focused conference three years ago; and, this year, it has officially launched the APWA Center for Sustainability. These issues are pretty all-encompassing, and since the initial discussions within APWA creating the APWA Center for Sustainability have become hot button points across the country. For example, low-impact development (LID), sustainability's return on investment, best management practices, and much more. The public works field needed some pro-active guidance and resources. APWA has taken that lead.

GeoPave vs. GeoWeb

0
In Auburn, Maine, public works officials want to replace a waterside asphalt turnout with a surface that will provide some infiltration rather than route runoff directly down the shoreline and into the water. Gravel alone has performed poorly before. So the city is testing two gravel-filled systems, each of which can support vehicle weight: GeoPave and GeoWeb. It's a contest of plastics blocks vs. geocells. Learn more here.;

TriAx Puts Cape Town's World Cup Stadium on Firm Footing

0
Tensar International's TriAx geogrid has been successfully installed by South African World Cup 2010 contractors to overcome poor load-bearing ground encountered on the new Green Point Stadium in Cape Town. Construction of the stadium, which will play host to a World Cup semi-final in July, was made problematic by the highly variable soil inherent to this spectacular ocean-side setting at the southern tip of the continent. Tensar Designs an Unexpected Bonus for Sustainability Centre

0
Lincolnshire's flagship new Epic Centre for sustainable building has strengthened its ground-breaking credentials with an unexpected cost saving solution using earth retaining technology from Tensar International. A conventionally-sloping green embankment was originally planned to abut directly against the new building at the Lincolnshire Showground, meaning it needed to be able to withstand a considerable imposed lateral earth pressure. But, by using an alternative Tensar design with Tensartech TR2 earth retaining technology to relieve lateral thrust, a 'value engineered' self-supporting earth structure was achieved.

Sustainable Slope Stabilization with Geocells

For many years, the hilly Pacific coastline of Panama has witnessed erosion-causing storms. This has presented a number of problems to the residents in the Punta Raton Beach area. With limited space allowed for development but with high demand to make it possible, contractors have been required to cut into the bordering slopes at a 70° angle. Geo Products LLC's PC Lauringer writes on how geocells solved the issue.
