SIBUR Invest $48 Million in Geosynthetics

Marchmont News, a daily, bi-lingual publication (Russian and English), reports that SIBUR Holding is investing $48 million in new geonet production in Kemerova and Orton. It is unclear from either SIBUR's official release or Marchmont's article whether geonets--for drainage--or geogrids--for reinforcement--are actually to be produced. Company comments in their official release would indicate higher-end geogrids are being produced. Learn more here.;

Nearly $80 Million in High-Speed Rail Funds Delivered to States

The U.S. Department of Transportation today announced that nearly $80 million in grants have been delivered to states as part of President Obama's historic high-speed and intercity passenger rail program. These grants will go toward the development of a brand new Recovery Act funded high-speed rail system in Florida as well as critical upgrades to existing passenger rail service throughout the country.

Emmbi Polyarns to use IPO proceeds for expansion

Mumbai, India-based Emmbi Polyarns, a polymer processing firm with significant interest in geosynthetics manufacture, has opened its initial public offering (IPO) of 95,74,000 equity shares of Rs 10 each for subscription. The price band has been fixed at Rs 40 to Rs 45 per equity share and the issue will close on February 3. The offer has been greeted with both excitement in the Indian market and concern for the dilution level. But Emmbi insists that its ambitious expansion goals, rooted heavily in geosynthetics, will justify the IPO and secure Emmbi's business. The 2011 International Achievement Awards from the Industrial Fabrics Association International (IFAI) have been announced. Thirty-three categories are included in the annual IAA competition. The winners are usually announced during the IFAI Expo Americas event (which is currently wrapping up in Baltimore). D35 Work Item: Geosynthetic Thickness Measurement

ASTM Committee D35 on Geosynthetics has announced a work item, WK29211, "Standard Test Method for Measuring the Nominal Thickness of Geosynthetics." It is a work item revision to existing standard D5199-01(2006). The posted rationale behind the work item is "to bring the Terminlogy Section in line with the Form amd Style Manual." TPE North American resin pricing, Feb. 1-5

Plastics Today has published its polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) spot price report. They found PE up $0.04/lb last week, a trend "driven by soaring monomer costs and pointing to higher contract resin prices in February." Ethylene shortages have played a role. Similarly, PP spot prices were up $0.02/lb last week. The rise in monomers shows "no abatement" at this point, especially since PP manufacturers have successfully passed along some recent cost increases. Learn more here.;

Geo-Frontiers 2011 Abstracts Deadline Extended to March 15

Geo-Frontiers 2011 brings together the North American Geosynthetics Society (NAGS), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Geo-Institute (GI) and the Industrial Fabrics Association International (IFAI). It will be held 13-16 March 2011 in Dallas, Texas. The conference organizers have announced an extension to the abstract submission deadline. Abstracts will now be accepted through 15 March 2010.
