The International Geosynthetics Society (IGS), International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), and Tensar International have sponsored the publication of all of the previous Mercer Lecture Series papers online for free. The Mercer Lecture Series honors Dr. Brian Mercer, the inventor of the modern reinforcement geogrid. The prestigious Mercer Lecture is selected by a panel comprising of one representative from Tensar, ISSMGE, IGS and previous Mercer Lecture Award Winners.

Year-over-year earnings reports show how far the global plastics industry has come since the start of 2009, with plastics titans Dow, ExxonMobil Chemical, and BASF showing double-digit gains in sales and volumes, even in Western economies that had heretofore lagged. Tensar International Corporation, the leader in geosynthetic soil reinforcement and stabilization, has increased prices for its subgrade improvement and road base reinforcement geogrid products globally. The 10 percent increase, effective May 2, has been implemented to partially offset significantly higher polymer raw material costs.

Dr. Jean-Pierre Giroud, a key figure in the development of the geosynthetics, and notably geotextiles, industry, will attend Expo Hightex on Tuesday, 8 October 2009, at Montréal's Bonsecours Market. In the morning, Dr. Giroud will explain the innovation processes responsible for creating this market segment, along with the mechanisms the textile industry has developed to meet the needs of civil engineering, and in the afternoon of the same day, he will speak on geosynthetics' applications in road construction. In St. Lawrence County, New York, five bridges have been constructed in the past year with geosynthetic reinforced soil (GRS) bridge abutments. Now, the federal government is sending a film crew to the area to document the next GRS construction. The speed of construction and performance strength found in these designs is grabbing attention and may soon find much larger acceptance throughtout the country.
