RITA Awards $2 Million for Transportation Research and Education

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) today awarded over $2 million in grants to four University Transportation Centers (UTC) located throughout the United States to advance research and education programs that address critical transportation challenges facing our nation. Recycled HDPE Geocells in Greenroofs

Cell-Tek Geocellular Confinement Systems are made with 100% recycled HDPE strips that are expanded to form honeycomb-shaped geocellular grid. The grid is filled with gravel, soil or aggregate. Though these systems have been commonly used in construction and landscaping for load support, earth retention, erosion control, channel revetment and slope protection, we're now finding them used in green roofs.

Maccaferri Wins Ground Engineering Award

Maccaferri was awarded "International Project of the Year" on Friday, May 4th at the Ground Engineering Awards, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. The awards, hosted by actor and presenter Robert Llewellyn, were presented at the Grosvenor House Hotel, on London's Park Lane. The award recognized the reinforcement work utilized on the construction of a new airport at Pakyong in the Himalayan state of Sikkim in North East India. Design of the slope used BS8006 for static design and FHWA (AASHTO) methodologies for the seismic design. Maccaferri's reinforcement technologies were used for this extraordinary design, which involves wall heights up to 74m and along 1480m. Read more.

Update: Union-Go Dairy

In Indiana, the Union-Go Dairy, which experienced a very frustrating but fascinating animal waste lagoon failure in 2008 has received approval to expand its farm with the installation of new lagoons. Following that phase of the project, the dairy will work with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) on what to do about the failed lagoon. One of the interesting aspects to the whales that developed in Union-Go's installation is that they were concentrated on one half of the lagoon. Learn more here.;

Earth Retaining Technology Breakthrough Meets Jeddah Challenge

A breakthrough in the construction of earth retaining structures in Saudi Arabia using technology from Tensar International has provided a safe and rapid solution to building 8m high bridge wing walls at two major infrastructure projects in Jeddah. The four major new bridge embankments are the first geogrid-reinforced soil modular block retaining walls to be constructed in Saudia Arabia and the first reinforced soil structures to be constructed in Jeddah. The solution overcomes the challenge of aggressive soil chemistry in the region, which had earlier caused the Saudi Ministry of Transport (MOT) to rule out the use of reinforced soil structures.

Geotextile Tubes to Defend 7-Miles of Grand Isle Shore

The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is entering into a $50 million agreement with the state of Louisiana to repair the Grand Isle storm-surge protection barriers. Governor Bobby Jindal signed the agreement on Thursday, April 2. The project is to be fast-tracked and will use geotextile tubes packed with sand to form the core flood defense measure along much of a seven mile stretch. The previous storm-surge defenses were destroyed by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita (2005) and Gustav and Ike (2008). The barrier system will be 13 feet high and will be composed of central, sand-filled, six-foot-diameter geotextile tubes with additional sand packed around them.

Mark C. Arnold has been announced as president, CEO and director of Gundle/SLT Environmental, Inc. (GSE), a global geosynthetics manufacturer. Arnold's follows the sudden death of long-time GSE leader Samir Badawi. Like Badawi, Arnold brings considerable international business acumen to GSE. Prior to joining GSE, he served as vice president and general manager at Lubrizol Corporation, where he focused on growth along the Pacific Rim and in India, South America and the Middle East.
