Geosynthetic Durability Assessment Series

Dr. Ian D. Peggs, P.E., P.Eng., has authored an introduction to ISO/TS 13434, "Geosynthetics: Guidelines for the Assessment of Durability." We publish here the sections on historical development, geotextiles, geosynthetic barriers and geogrids. For online readability, we've broken the sections into four pages, but all references have been repeated on each page for convenience of use. Links to the subsequent sections on geotextiles, geosynthetic barriers and geogrids can be found at the end of each part under "Related Sections." Begin here with the section on "Historical Development."

High-Speed Railways to be 40-Year Project

0
With full White House support, America should be running high-speed railroads by the end of the decade, writes John Rosenthal. Such trains "consume less fuel, produce less carbon dioxide, and promote urban redevelopment, which has broader environmental benefits," said Kevin Brubaker, deputy director of the Environmental Law and Policy Center in Chicago. However, Joseph Szabo, head of the Federal Railroad Administration, reminds us: "This is a 40-year build-out, just like the Interstate Highway System was in the 1950s." Learn more here.;

ASTM International has relaunched its website with nice new look. One of the most-welcomed additions to the update is a new navigation bar arrangement. With the vast amount of sectors ASTM's consensus-oriented standards committees are involved in--including our favorite, Committee D35 on Geosynthetics--the cleaner navigation tool is welcomed. Also of note, rotating news stories have been added to the front page, the site search tool has been improved, and the "My Committees" page has been streamlined. We encourage our readers to take a spin on the new ASTM website. Read more.
