Santa Fe Gold Corporation has announced that the New Mexico Office of the State Engineer has issued a permit required to proceed with construction of the tailings dam impoundment at the Banner Mill located near Lordsburg, New Mexico. The company expects to complete construction of the tailings impoundment during the current quarter and to begin processing operations shortly thereafter. This includes the installation of geomembrane.

Use of GRS Bridge Abutments on the Rise

For the first time, Yamhill County, Oregon will use a method of supporting bridges that's slowly gaining popularity for its simplicity. "It's a low-cost method of building a foundation in areas where the bedrock is deep," County Engineer Bill Gille said. Instead of drilling down, workers on the Laughlin Hill bridge project will build the abutments using a geosynthetic reinforced soil (GRS) method, alternating between geotextiles, compacted fill, and cinder blocks. BC News: Repairs Begin at Esquimal Lagoon

After more than five months of traffic closure, the Esquimalt Lagoon bridge in Colwood, British Columbia--on Victoria Island--is being repaired. The City has placed timbers at the base of the abutments to protect them from waves. On the north side, a section of the asphalt is being removed and fill material excavated out. EPA Approves Cleanup Plan for Remaining Coal Ash at Kingston TVA Site

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 4 today has approved the Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) selected cleanup plan for the next phase of coal ash removal at the TVA Kingston site in Roane County, Tenn. The cleanup plan requires TVA to permanently store on site all of the ash being removed from the Swan Pond Embayment. The embayment area will then be restored to conditions that protect human health and the environment. After careful review of all comments received between January and April, TVA, EPA and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), agreed that the selected cleanup plan provides the best option to protect public health and the environment. According to the release, for the new perimeter dike TVA "will place dry ash atop an engineered base layer of sand, gravel and geo-fabric."

Well, this is interesting. Geosynthetics are rarely introduced to students in early education; but Andrew Harris, a high school junior in Riviera Beach, Florida, will compete in the Palm Beach County Science and Engineering Fair with his study "Geosynthetics: Creating a Stronger Soil."
