Sixty-eight road projects in 31 states will receive $93.9 million in Public Lands Highways grant funds to improve access to public lands, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood announced today. It's late Wednesday evening as I post this from Salt Lake City where IFAI's Geosynthetics 2009 conference opened. Day one proved to be full and engaging. A keynote lecture, technical sessions, a fiery polypropylene geomembranes panel discussion, short courses and a reception. The first of a series of reports from the event is posted here.

During the Geo-Frontiers 2011 event, the Geosynthetic Institute (GSI) held not only its 24th Geosythetic Research Institute event (GRI-24) but the institute's general assembly. In only a few days, the first International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) members will arrive in Dallas, Texas for the Geo-Frontiers 2011 event. The conference itself takes place 13-16 March, but starting on the 11th and carrying through the event the IGS will hold a number of meetings and lectures, most of which are open. Key gatherings include the new technical committees, continentally focused committees, the North American chapter's meeting, a corporate members reception and much more. When Tony Allen, P.E., was at work on his civil engineering master’s thesis at Oregon State University in the early 1980s, he certainly couldn’t have foreseen the impact it would have during the next 30 years on geotextiles and geogrids in reinforcement applications. Of great importance, the work he pursued then (and since) has led to real understanding of the durability of geosynthetic reinforcements. Maccaferri was awarded "International Project of the Year" on Friday, May 4th at the Ground Engineering Awards, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. The awards, hosted by actor and presenter Robert Llewellyn, were presented at the Grosvenor House Hotel, on London's Park Lane. The award recognized the reinforcement work utilized on the construction of a new airport at Pakyong in the Himalayan state of Sikkim in North East India. Design of the slope used BS8006 for static design and FHWA (AASHTO) methodologies for the seismic design. Maccaferri's reinforcement technologies were used for this extraordinary design, which involves wall heights up to 74m and along 1480m. Read more.
