The Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO) held its 26th annual national conference, Dam Safety 2009, September 27 through October 1 at the Westin Diplomat in Hollywood, Florida. ASDSO's annual meeting is one of the world's leading conferences dedicated to the safe design, construction and maintenance of dams and levees. This year's conference attracted approximately 800 attendees from all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and several nations.

EPA Budget Testimony Highlights

Electrokinetics Nears Profit

UK-based Electrokinetics, which combines geosynthetic and electrokinetic technologies for drying out soils, was launched five years ago out of research and development work conducted at Newcastle University. The company has made its first major deals now and is very close to turning profitable. Electrokinetics has also received extra funding to further refine its technology. After 13 years as the Director of the ASCE's Geo-Institute, Carol Bowers is departing…for another position within ASCE. Bowers is taking a fantastic new challenge in transferring to a newly created position within ASCE for the creation of a Sustainable Infrastructure Rating System. The United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Human Affairs reports that the UN and the government of Vietnam are working together on a plan to better defend Vietnam against typhoons, flooding and even sea level rises. ASTM International has announced the launch of two new peer-reviewed, online-only journals: Advances in Civil Engineering Materials (ACEM) and Materials Performance and Characterization (MPC). Final Call: Abstracts on Soil-Structure-Geosynthetics Interaction

At Geo-Frontiers 2011, a special session will be held on "Soil-Structure-Geosynthetics Interaction." Session organizers invite abstracts through the overall conference abstract submission deadline: 8 March 2010. Declaration of dividend TenCate for 2009

During the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders of Royal Ten Cate, which was held on Thursday 8 April 2010, the dividend for the 2009 financial year was declared at EUR 0.60(2008: EUR 0.85) per ordinary share of EUR 2.50 par value. The dividend is to be paid in cash, or at the shareholder's option in ordinary shares charged to the share premium reserve. The value of the stock dividend will surpass the value of the cash dividend by 0 to 3%.

Geogrids in Virginia

Construction magazine has published an update on the Virginia Department of Transportation's Newport News road-widening project. The project is entering its Phase III, which includes the installation of geotextiles and, in some places, geogrids to strengthen the silty and blue marle clay soils that characterize the peninsula.
