The International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) is holding its first-ever photo competition. Members should keep an eye on the deadline date: 1 February 2010. This initiative comes just ahead of the planned April 2010 launch of the redesigned IGS website and May 2010's major, quadrennial IGS conference: 9ICG. The 9th International Conference on Geosynthetics will be held 23-27 May 2010 in Guaruja, Brazil (near São Paulo).

MECA Workshop: Permanent Erosion Control

On 29 July 2010, a one-day workshop from the Minnesota Erosion Control Association (MECA) will introduce designers, regulators and contractors to the latest permanent erosion control practices and techniques. Examples of successful and unsuccessful erosion control projects will be provided, along with samples of materials and corresponding manufactures design and informational literature. Presenters include Steve Klein (Barr Engineering); John Chapman (University of Minnesota Erosion Control and Stormwater Management Program); and various product vendors. Cazzuffi Chairs European Standardization Meetings on Geosynthetics (CEN TC 189)

From 23 to 25 May 2012 the annual meetings of the European Committee for Standardization on Geosynthetics (CEN TC 189) took place at UNI in Milano. For the first time, the meetings were chaired by Daniele Cazzuffi (CESI SpA, Milano), who was unanimously elected President of the Committee in January 2012, for a period of three years 2012–2014. Cazzuffi is a geosynthetics veteran who also previously served as president of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) Council. The annual meetings in Milano were attended by more than 100 experts from 12 European countries and from the United States.

A record-setting 1900+ attended Geo-Frontiers 2011 in Dallas

More than 1920 participants attended Geo-Frontiers 2011 in Dallas, a conference featuring advances in geotechnical engineering, among other highlights. The event was co-organized by the Industrial Fabrics Association International (IFAI), the Geosynthetics Materials Association (GMA), the Geo-Institute (G-I) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the North American Geosynthetics Society (NAGS), and held under the auspices of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS).

Review: Global Waste Management Symposium

Earlier this month, geosynthetica's role as a media partner to Penton Media's Global Waste Management Symposium was completed as the event unfolded in Copper Mountain, Colorado. It was a marvelous event that touched upon current and future practice through a shrewd mix of presentations from active engineering practices, on-going research, and academia. Also, the Geosynthetic Institute (GSI) arranged two fine session on the design, installation and monitoring of engineered berms--a much-needed and much-appreciated dialogue. Rahall II (D-WV)--may be attempting to minimize new regulations on coal ash slurry reservoirs. Things may not be as they seem in this one, however. Politics has much to do with timing. Read more.
