GRS Bridge Abutments Gaining Attention

In St. Lawrence County, New York, five bridges have been constructed in the past year with geosynthetic reinforced soil (GRS) bridge abutments. Now, the federal government is sending a film crew to the area to document the next GRS construction. The speed of construction and performance strength found in these designs is grabbing attention and may soon find much larger acceptance throughtout the country. The film will be shown at upcoming transportation design sessions in New York, Massachusetts, and Atlanta. Learn more here.;

EC10 Proposals Due May 15

The International Erosion Control Association (IECA) is accepting abstracts for its annual conference through May 15. EC10 will be held in Dallas, Texas 14-17 February 2010. IECA organizes its work into 8 technology sections: slopes, stream restoration, vegetative establishment, stormwater management, wetlands, erosion and sediment control, beach and shoreline stabilization, and wind erosion. The "Hot Topics" for 2010 are LEED for new construction, sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation and design process. Highway Investment Hits $20 Billion

The Federal Highway Administration crossed the $20 billion mark in approved obligations for highway, road and bridge projects this week, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced today. Of the $26.6 billion available for federal highway and bridge projects under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, more than 75 percent has now been obligated. To date, nearly 8,500 highway projects have been approved and nearly 5,000 are underway.

A rail yard in Utah has been in operation since the first transcontinental railroad reached the area in 1869. Four major railroad companies have used the rail yard for switching, maintenance of locomotives, and transferring cargo. A DNAPL tar plume was discovered running from the northern end of the yard under an adjacent highway and into a neighboring pond. HDPE geomembrane and Organoclay Reactive Core Mat from CETCO were used to remediate the site. Read more.

The engines appear to be running full-throttle down in Houston. Having just completed an IPO and re-entering public trading, GSE is now announcing a new line of geomembranes. On a new page on the company website, the company describes its GSE High Performance Geomembranes as being "manufactured with the highest quality resin specifically formulated for flexible geomembranes. A premium grade carbon black is used that incorporates a fine particle size for enhanced resistance to UV radiation." Characteristics of these new formulations include extended life and heightened multi-axial performance.
