Giroud Named a Member of Order of the Legion d'Honneur

0
Since 1970, J.P. Giroud, Ph.D., has worked at the forefront of the geosynthetics field (including coining the terms "geotextile" and "geomembrane", which paved the way for the 'geo-terminology') and earned many accolades for his pioneering work. His many awards and key industry positions include serving as president of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS), being honored with the establishment of an IGS "Giroud Lecture", being granted 'hero' status by the Geo-Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), being selected to deliver prestigious lectures (e.g. ASCE Terzaghi Lecture, Vienna Terzaghi Lecture, and Mercer Lecture), and being elected Member of the US National Academy of Engineering. This year, on April 2, Dr. Giroud was named a member of the Order of the Legion d'Honneur by a decree signed by French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Established in 1802, the Order is the highest decoration in France. Dr. Giroud has US/French dual citizenship. Read more.

FEMA: Geotextiles in Erosion Control and Embankment

0
In April 2009, the State of Arkansas experienced severe storms and flooding, affecting 37 counties and causing damage to infrastructures. This resulted in the 16 June 2009, presidential disaster declaration, DR-184, for Public Assistance. In Lafayette County alone, four roads were washed out, necessitating repairs and mitigation. A specialist recommended using a geotextile to stabilize the embankment and make the road more resilient once repairs were completed. Read more.

EPS Study from Ceresana

0
The newest study from Ceresana Research covers the plastic, expanded polystyrene (EPS). Due to its technical characteristics, such as its light weight, rigidity and excellent formability, this material can be found in a wide range of applications: insulation against heat, sound, and cold, as well as in the packaging industry, and in leisure and sporting goods. The construction industry is the largest EPS market, with a worldwide share of just less than 60%. This sector‘s importance will continue increasing in the future. Manufacturing of products for the construction industry will most likely account for 66% of EPS demand in 2016. Learn more here.;

APWA's Sustainability Mission

0
Over the past few years, the American Public Works Association (APWA) has spearheaded a new sustainability vision for the public works management field. Two key investments have been made and show great promise for the future: APWA launched a smaller, sustainability-focused conference three years ago; and, this year, it has officially launched the APWA Center for Sustainability. These issues are pretty all-encompassing, and since the initial discussions within APWA creating the APWA Center for Sustainability have become hot button points across the country. For example, low-impact development (LID), sustainability's return on investment, best management practices, and much more. The public works field needed some pro-active guidance and resources. APWA has taken that lead.

Accessing Canada's Ring of Fire

0
In Northern Ontario, a 150-square-kilometre section of the James Bay Lowlands is referred to as the "Ring of Fire." It's a mineral-rich area known for high-grade deposits of gold, copper, nickel, zinc, chromite and palladium. But accessing the area and transporting heavy mining loads from it is complicated by super-saturated soils which some engineers compare to the soils in Florida's Everglades. Geosynthetic support systems, such as geotextiles (which are used in road-building over soft soils like peat). Engineers are evaluating numerous approaches now. Learn more here.;

Sustainability: A New Vision For Public Works

0
To support a new sustainability vision in public works management, the American Public Works Association (APWA) has recently created the new APWA Center for Sustainability. The Center was designed to enable APWA to become the driving force for sustainability in public works, and to support the development of the next generation of public works leaders with strong sustainability credentials and commitment. In the 21st century, the public works professional must think beyond the current generation, work closely with a more engaged and better informed public, and take an integrated systems approach to addressing livability and community issues.

Geogrid Requested to Fix Construction Timeline

0
In Carl Junction, Missouri, contractor Larry Snyder and Co. encountered an uncharacteristic and protracted spell of bad weather in what had been a fairly direct construction project. After 56 days of construction were disrupted by snow, rain or excessive mud, the city council extending the contract timeline (to avoid fines being assessed to the company). The company has now requested money for geogrids to conduct some parking lot construction. Geogrids, the company believes, are the only approach it can use in these less than ideal weather conditions and to get the project done more quickly without sacrificing quality and safety.
