Geosynthetics are playing an enormous role in updating how coal combustion residuals (CCRs) are managed and stored, both in the near term and for long-term environmental security. INOVA Geosynthetics is now bringing together the engineering insight of three major North American geosynthetics companies to promote CCR capping systems.
The Coal Ash Performance Products (CAPP) approach from Pennsylvania-headquartered INOVA draws upon geosynthetic material expertise from Solmax, Afitex-Texel, and Terrafix Geosynthetics.
CAPP’s partners provide high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) geomembranes, leak location / integrity survey experience, Bentofix® geosynthetic clay liners, and Draintube drainage and venting materials for containing fly ash, bottom ash, boiler slag, flue gas desulfurization materials, and more.
The new CAPP website includes product spec sheets and system descriptions and capabilities, including standard and custom design options.
Highlights from the system
- Draintube CAPP enhanced flow drainage geocomposite allows designers and operators to replace the entire leachate collection and removal layer, as required by RCRA Subtitle D. It includes on top a geocomposite filter specifically developed for CCRs.
- Solmax’s geomembrane solutions include the White Reflective Prime Finish product line. This innovation mitigates the effects of heat (such as wrinkles), increases service life of the membrane, and enhances installation quality. The result is a better hydraulic barrier and a longer lasting geomembrane.
- Bentofix® CCR Thermal Lock GCLs are made of polymer-enhanced natural sodium bentonite clay that provides the protection required in containment of potentially high ionic strength leachates. The proprietary heat treating process – the Thermal Lock process – permanently lock the needle-punched fibers into place. Properties of this process include increased internal shear resistance, long term creep resistance, and a much lower bulk void ratio for an improved behavior during and after installation. Bentofix CNSL – CCR offers a high internal shear resistance and a bentonite compatibility testing and proven with CCR.
