27 March 2010 – The waterfront of Harrison, New Jersey was once referred to by President Taft as a “hive of industry.” Over time, the waterfront has disintegrated into a crumbling assortment of abandoned factories and warehouses. With the help of the NJ DEP, the structures were demolished and the soils were remediated, making way for one of the largest mixed-use redevelopment projects in New Jersey.
The town of Harrison has made extraordinary progress in regards to its revitalization efforts with the grand opening of a 25,000-seat stadium known as Red Bull Arena. The world-class soccer stadium is situated on an idle Brownfield location and is the foundation of an enormous commercial, retail and residential redevelopment project.
As part of the redevelopment process that included the mitigation of potential vapor intrusion concerns, the Louis Berger Group specified CETCO’s Liquid Boot® gas vapor barrier system as well as the Liquid Boot® GeoVent sub slab depressurization system as a part of their overall remedial design.
CETCO certified installer, EAI, Inc. of Jersey City, NJ, installed the GeoVent® sub slab venting directly into the stone sub-grade which was then connected to vent risers and run up the outside of the stadium. EAI also installed the Liquid Boot® gas vapor barrier to the underslab of the stadium bleachers, sealing directly onto the timber piles and around haunched areas of the foundation. After installation, EAI performed rigorous QA/QC procedures including smoke testing, which consists of pumping smoke underneath the entire membrane in order to detect any pinhole leaks. Once QA/QC procedures were completed to ensure a vapor-tight seal, Liquid Boot® UltraShield was installed as a protection course over the membrane.
Thanks to the concerted efforts of the DEP, the engineers, CETCO, EAI and all other parties involved in this massive undertaking, Harrison is well on its way to recovering a once industry-rich part of their town.
