Concrete Canvas has won a major contract to supply its Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mat (GCCM) for one of Australia’s largest resource projects: the Wheatstone liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Western Australia. Worth more than US$1M, the contract supplies more than 32,000 m2 of Concrete Canvas® GCCM (CC) for a range of erosion control measures. The work is part of the long-term surface water management plan for the site.
Roughly $80 billion in development projects supports the fast-emerging LNG market in Australia, according to the Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA). Asia’s ever-increasing energy needs serves as a major driver. LNG exports to Asia have easily surpassed 20 million tonnes annually.
Many expect Australia’s overall LNG exports to quadruple within five years.
CC FOR WHEATSTONE LNG DEVELOPMENT
Bechtel specified the CC product primarily for the logistical and program benefits it provides the customer (Chevron) over conventional concrete solutions. CC reduces the environmental impact of the work while supporting an expected service life of 50+ years. Delivered in rolls, CC is a flexible, concrete-impregnated fabric that hardens on hydration to form a thin, durable, waterproof, and fire-resistant concrete layer.The material is roughly 10 times faster to install than conventional concrete.
The Wheatstone LNG plant is one of Australia’s largest resource projects. Currently under construction, it will process natural gas from the Wheatstone and Iago fields. The project is a joint venture between Australian subsidiaries of Chevron, Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company (KUFPEC), Woodside Petroleum Limited, and Kyushu Electric Power Company, together with PE Wheatstone Pty Ltd, part owned by TEPCO.
The construction works have been heavily scrutinized. Project partners must minimize environmental, community, and social impact. The specification of CC for the development comes after its successful installation in other Australian LNG projects at Curtis Island and Gorgon (Chevron).
