HUESKER Synthetic GmbH hosted a special conference on 19 and 20 January 2012 in Düsseldorf and welcomed representatives of subsidiaries, numerous national and international business associates and partners of the company as well as representatives of engineering companies, testing institutes, authorities and universities.
The main focus of the conference was on geotechnical engineering but special attention was also given to engineering solutions using geosynthetics dealing with issues such as sustainability, future outlook, quality management and outstanding projects.
Top-class speakers presented their work and views on these challenging subjects.
The event was opened by Professor Jorge G. Zornberg, Ph. D., President of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS). He is the Fluor Centennial Professor for the Geotechnical Engineering program at the University of Texas, he also received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) which was presented to him by the President of the USA.
The conference was highlighted by the 150th anniversary celebration of HUESKER Synthetic GmbH. In his welcome speech, Dr. Ing. Dimiter Alexiew, Technical Director of HUESKER Synthetic GmbH, not only addressed the development of the company, he also referred to several milestone projects in the development of geotechnical engineering using geosynthetics as well as winning the IGS Award in 2010.
“We have to address up-to-date and challenging issues: this is how we have been able to improve our efficiency over the past years,”
Alexiew said. A far-reaching strategic process had set the course for ongoing success in all business sectors.
“Founded on 27th December 1861, HUESKER Synthetic GmbH employees, past and present, can look back on one and a half centuries of service to customers and partners”, Dr. Alexiew summed up. Continual investment in research and technology has enabled HUESKER to become a world leader in the manufacture and application of geosynthetics.
Dr. Alexiew also spoke about the most serious crisis in the history of the company which brought about a major change at the same time: during the post-war years competition from abroad had made the situation even more difficult for the company, especially in the field of high-quality textiles. From the 1960s onwards the company concentrated on the manufacturing and sales of products made of synthetic fibres and synthetic materials for hydraulic engineering applications and other civil engineering fields where, today, the term “geosynthetic textiles” is used, thus laying the foundation for HUESKER Synthetic GmbH.
Dr. Alexiew went on to explain: “We were able to build on this solid basis throughout the years which set the stage for our sustained growth today.”
Is it possible to manage the future? The challenge of the 21st century
To close the conference, Professor Eckhard Minx, a futurologist, presented to the audience:
At the beginning of his talk Professor Minx put forward a theory which has often become reality for HUESKER in the past: “Today, a lot of our decisions, and particularly those with a long time horizon and far-reaching consequences, have to be made in a turbulent environment consciously and with a view to the consequences.” The increasing extent of decisions and insight into this scope calls for a comprehensive view of the world and the related problems. In addition to “liquefying constant values” (Wolfgang Streek), this is why there is a need to be concerned with the future.
Cause for celebration!
At the end of a successful conference HUESKER Synthetic GmbH invited its guests to join in the celebration at the Classic Remise Meilenwerk in Düsseldorf. The company’s 150th anniversary was celebrated with a very special gala evening.
The motto of the evening was “Our Trademark – the finest minds!”. During the Anniversary Gala one could feel the community spirit and pride for the accomplishments of those concerned, and a strong feeling of “belonging together” could also be sensed among the guests. The celebration was a gesture of thanks for the staff and customers who are significantly responsible for their contributions to the success which HUESKER Synthetic GmbH enjoys.
“When a medium-sized company is still operating successfully after 150 years then there is every reason to be pleased,” Dr. Rittstieg, member of the Advisory Board of HUESKER Synthetic GmbH, announced enthusiastically. In addition, he emphasized, it was a pleasure to include customers, partners and staff in this festive event.
The Meilenwerk Düsseldorf has gained a reputation as one of the most attractive event locations in Düsseldorf. A unique mixture of historical architecture and veteran cars with an unforgettable atmosphere makes it a very special location.
In addition to the numerous culinary delicacies the guests enjoyed a fascinating journey through time between the years 1861 and 2011. The decades were presented in an artistic setting. Everybody has seen pictures of the German Wochenschau newsreels and today’s Tagesschau news programme. These were used and chosen thematically to fit the show, making the olden days come alive again. Pictures of HUESKER, including historical photos of the site, staff, machines and products were also integrated in the presentation.
The exciting and entertaining film sequences were staged in a lively manner with variety acts artistically representing the different decades.
During the anniversary celebration HUESKER’s guests “strolled through” 150 years of company and contemporary history.
