The International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) has created a new lecture series. The LMNS Lecture honors four of the organizers of the 1st International Conference on Geosynthetics (1 ICG): E. Leflaive (Chairman, France), A. McGown (United Kingdom), J. Nieuwenhuis (Netherlands) and M. Sotton (France). Daniele Cazzuffi has been invited to deliver the inaugural LMNS Lecture at EuroGeo 6 in Istanbul (25 – 28 September 2016).
Daniele Cazzuffi, a former president of the International Geosynthetics Society, will speak on “Evolution in design of geotextile filters. ”

The LMNS Lecture will continue as a IGS Regional Conference keynote.
The event now recognized as 1 ICG was held 20 – 22 April 1977 in Paris. It was called the International Conference on the Use of Fabrics in Geotechnics, and among the watershed moments from the gathering was Dr. J.P. Giroud coining two terms that have become central to the field of geosynthetics: “geotextile” and “geomembrane. ”

The Paris conference introduced many new users to the fast-developing field of geosynthetics—a field which had yet to give itself a name—and, perhaps even more importantly, connected many companies, universities, and individual engineers who had already been furthering understanding of the materials. These connections helped identify current and needed characteristics, manufacturing potential, applications for adoption, design methodologies, and group needs that helped officially establish the field.
Many of these same professionals returned to Paris in 1983 to formally found the International Geosynthetics Society.
