9 September 2010 – The “Living Danube” is the advanced wastewater treatment plant project in Budapest, Hungary, that is being built to achieve a general recovery and environmentally sustainable management of the Danube River. Another stage of the project was recently completed resulting in the plant now being protected by a high performance green roof that exploits the properties of DuPont™ Typar® Geosynthetics to deliver long-term reliable functionality.
The plant’s large flat roof (about 10,000 square meters) was designed as a green vegetation surface–to absorb airborne dust and similar impurities, drown noise and retain up to 90% of water, preventing rainwater from draining into the sewer. Roof vegetation consumes carbon dioxide and releases oxygen. Green roofs also provide protection to roof structures and insulation layers against temperature fluctuations and ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which significantly improves their lifetime.
More than 78,000 square meters of DuPont™ Typar® SF Geosynthetic was specified in the project. Typar®, a DuPont Building Innovations product, is a spunbonded, non-woven fabric made of continuous 100% polypropylene filaments. It has high tensile properties and excellent water permeability and is one of the most well-known and broadly used high-quality materials for road building, drainage systems and inversion roofing. It does not soak up water and cannot freeze, thus eliminating a number of technical problems.
Bellavics László, a founder of the Hungarian Green Roof Builder Association who designed the “Living Danube” green roof, said, "We have been working with DuPont™ Typar® for over 10 years. Our long-term experience shows the main benefit of DuPont™ Typar® is its unique, thermally-bonded nonwoven structure which brings an exceptional mechanical strength and durability of the geosynthetic and longer life to the green roof where it is installed. Another advantage is that its pores do not clog with soil particles, which guarantees its long-term filtration ability.”
