22 February 2010 – Diversified manufacturer Leggett & Platt (NYSE: LEG) unveiled its Landmark Earth Solutions product line in Dallas, Texas at Environmental Connection 2010 (EC10), the International Erosion Control Association’s (IECA) annual conference and exposition. Landmark Earth Solutions is a new line of civil engineering products combining the latest scientific and technological advances with more than 125 years of manufacturing expertise. The product line is an initiative of Leggett & Platt’s Industrial Materials Segment.

The initial Landmark Earth Solutions product offering includes ScourStop™ transition mat technology; Safe Slope® hydraulically applied mulch; and BarriCage™, a welded wire gabion system.

The flagship product, ScourStop, is a transition mat system that provides a no-maintenance, vegetated, NPDES-compliant alternative to rock rip rap. Typical applications include culvert outfalls, overflow structures, stream banks, bridge drains, and levee and shoreline protection.

ScourStop transition mats provide impact resistance, tensile strength and ease of maintenance when placed over a turf reinforcement mat and/or sod and anchored to the native topography of the site. Areas of the highest hydraulic stresses, and potential for scour, are protected by the transition mat while other soil cover BMPs are used in downstream, lower stress areas.

“ScourStop is an engineered technology that’s been performance tested at one of the nation’s premier hydraulics laboratories, Colorado State University,” said Bill Murphy, P.E., Applications Engineer for ScourStop. “No other erosion control product provides a proven vegetated solution with comparable performance values for mitigating scour under extreme hydraulic conditions.”

Prototype performance results for ScourStop have been shown to meet or exceed those of conventional hard armor solutions for scour outlet protection. Murphy said ScourStop, fully vegetated, could withstand hydraulic velocities of 31 ft/sec and 16 pounds of shear on a 2:1 slope.

Safe Slope is a natural fiber hydromulch made from a blend of cotton plant byproducts, other crop residue and polymers to protect against seed and soil loss from the elements. The product’s patent-pending technology utilizes both chemical and mechanical techniques to create a flexible, porous seal, absorbing and holding enough moisture to facilitate seed growth and reduce erosion. Safe Slope has been developed through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture — Agricultural Research Service. It will be available for sale in mid-2010.

BarriCage is a welded wire gabion system for soil retention and slope stabilization, erosion and flood control at levees and stream banks, and architectural applications. Leggett & Platt’s vertically integrated wire production enables it to offer a consistent, high quality, cost effective gabion product.
