GSI-Asia 2010The Geosynthetic Institute (GSI), based in Folsom, Pennsylvania, and National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST) in Taiwan have announced that the first international GSI-Asia Geosynthetics Conference will take place 16-18 November 2010 in Taichung, Taiwan. NPUST currently is the home of GSI’s Taiwan office (GSI-Taiwan). GSI’s Geosynthetic Research Institute (GRI) annually holds an international event in North America. That event is nearing its 25th anniversary. The launch of an international forum serving the Asia region is exciting news.

GSI-Asia will be sponsored by the National Science Council, Minister of Economic, and Minister of Education, Taiwan. The conference theme is “Geosynthetics in Infrastructure Applications.” The three-day program will include keynotes, special lecutres, and discussion sessions.

Key presentations during the conference will include:

  • Robert M. Koerner, Director, GSI, “The Importance of Drainage Control for MSE Walls and Slopes”
  • Imad L. Al-Qadi, Director, Illinois Center of Transportation, “Geosynthetics in Pavements: Optimization through Advanced Modeling and Field Response Measurements”
  • Chris Lawson, Global Director, Soil Reinforcement & Geosynthetics, TenCate, “Geosynthetic Soil Reinforcement in Asia”
  • Jorge G. Zornberg, Vice President of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS), "Geosynthetic Capillary Barriers"

Also, four guiding session themes with speakers and audience discussion will take place over the three-day event and focus on:

  • MSE structures
  • Transportation and pavement engineering
  • Coastal and hydraulic engineering
  • Erosion control and sustainable engineering

The conference will provide an excellent opportunity for engineers, academics, manufacturers, and government officials to present and exchange the latest developments and the applications related to geosynthetics. Taichung is the third-most populous city in Taiwan and serves as an industrial, business and cultural center for central Taiwan. As the island has developed, Taichung’s importance has grown substantially.
