German Geotechnical Society16 August 2010 – The 31st Geotechnical Conference and Exhibition of the German Geotechnical Society (DGGT) will take place 3-6 November 2010 in Munich at the International Conference Center of Munich. The event celebrates 50 years of DGGT events and activities.

Two key presentations may be of significant interest to the geosynthetic community:

"25+ Year Performance of Geotextile-Reinforced Embankments on Soft Ground in Germany"

Dr.-Ing. D. Alexiew, HUESKER Synthetic GmbH, Gescher
Dipl.-Ing. K.-H. Blume, Ingenieurbüro für Geotechnik, Overath
Dipl.-Ing. R. Hillmann, Bundesanstalt für Straßenwesen, Bergisch Gladbach

In the 1980s, geotextile reinforcement was used to ensure stability in the base of two road embankments constructed on soft ground: a test embankment at Rübke (1981) and the bypass at Grossenmeer (1986). The projects have been steadily monitored. Geotextile samples were taken after 14 and 28 years to evaluate long-term resistance data and geotextile performance.

“Innovative Scour Protection for Offshore Wind Turbines”

Prof. Dr.-Ing. G. Heerten, NAUE GmbH & Co. KG, Espelkamp

The establishment of offshore wind farms in the North Sea has revealed a need for better scour protection for the safety of wind turbine installations and operations. Compared with traditional, rock-based scour protection measures, geosynthetic nonwoven solutions have found increasing adoption. Two factors have influenced this trend: geosynthetic measures can use local fill, and they do not present a risk of damage to cables and other steel components at the turbine base.
