Geosynthetic Ground Improvement SeminarGlobal Synthetics, in partnership with Naue Geosynthetics and supported by Engineers Australia, is organizing a full-day seminar titled “Geosynthetic Ground Improvement.” The event will be held in four cities across Australia, November 23-29, and will feature expert lecturers Drs. Kerry Rowe and Barry Christopher. These two eminent speakers will present the latest research and practices from their experiences worldwide.

Session one will focus on “Environmental Barrier Systems,” including discussion on drainage layers, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembranes and clay liners, and an emphasis on geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs).

Session two will concentrate on “Pavement Design” and address geosynthetics in paved and unpaved road design and performance, as well as affiliated transportation issues.

The schedule of cities and venues is as follows:

  • Perth — Hyatt Regency — November 23
  • Melbourne — The Sebel Albert Park — November 25
  • Sydney — The Sebel Parramatta — November 26
  • Brisbane — The Sebel Suites — November 29

The Instructors

Dr. Kerry Rowe is Professor of Civil Engineering and a Research Director of the GeoEngineering Centre at Queen’s-RMC, Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada. Prior to joining Queen’s in 2000, Professor Rowe was educated at the University of Sydney BSc (1973), BE (Hons I, 1975), PhD (1979), D.Eng (1993), worked for the Australian Government Department of Construction in Sydney, spent 21 years at the University of Western Ontario and served 10 years as Vice Principal (Research) at Queen’s University. Author of more than 240 refereed journal papers; 3 books; 14 book chapters; and more than 260 full conference papers, he has extensive research and consulting experience in the geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering field.

Dr. Barry R. Christopher is an independent geotechnical engineering consultant specializing in: reinforced soil and other ground improvement technologies; geosynthetics application and design; and, gotechnical/geosynthetics testing and instrumentation. He has authored numerous technical papers on these subjects including six design manuals for the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), a textbook on Geosynthetic Engineering and three National Cooperative Highway Research Program syntheses including Pavement Subsurface Drainage Systems, Maintenance of Highway Edgedrains and Geosynthetic Reinforcements in Roadway Sections.
