Four years ago, GSE Environmental formally announced the development of polyethylene geomembranes for use in applications with prolonged exposure to temperatures above 60°C (140°F). Now, the company has been awarded US Patent No. 9,518,176 B2 for its High Temperature Geomembrane Liners and Master Batch Compositions. The newest addition to the series, GSE High Temperature Liner, is engineered to withstand prolonged exposure to temperatures up to 100°C (212°F).
These high temperature environments can accelerate loss of vital properties in a geosynthetic barrier. Oxidation and UV degradation can reduce the core strength properties of the barrier system. To increase material stability and resistance to the unique challenges of high temperature applications, GSE worked with resin producers to create an even better performing HDPE.
HIGH TEMPERATURE GEOMEMBRANE APPLICATIONS
Applications of note in which high temperature geomembrane show promise include:
- Heap Leach Mining
- Oil & Gas Operations
- Hot Liquid Storage
- Industrial Ponds
- Process Water Containment
- Solar Ponds
- Waste Water Treatment
- Bioreactor Landfills
“The High Temperature Liner continues GSE’s history of developing and improving products in response to industry needs and through collaboration with our customers,” said Ed Zimmel, Vice President, Engineering in a statement on the patent being awarded. “It is through innovative new product development such as this that GSE continues to be known as a pioneer in geosynthetics.”
