The International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) has published its latest edition of IGS News. The semi-annual publication contains reports from some of the IGS’ 30+ international chapters, event recaps from around the world, short course announcements, and much more.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE ISSUE
In addition to recurring content, such as the opening message from IGS President Fumio Tatsuoka, the current IGS News includes plenty of interesting content that one might tie together under a theme of future energy and growth.
Two feature articles are certainly worth noting under this theme:
John Cowland, IGS Treasurer and Hong Kong resident, provides an excellent summary of the IGS in Asia. It was surprising to learn that not only are there 10 chapters in Asia–with more perhaps forthcoming shortly–but that one-sixth of the IGS’ corporate members are in Japan. Also, though the business world has been hot to report on India’s construction trend and potential in recent years, it’s old hat for the IGS. The IGS India chapter has been active since 1988.
And IGS Vice President Jorge Zornberg provides a very encouraging summary of international chapter growth, including graphs identifying the society’s global coverage and chapter incorporation. Zornberg has also helped pull together information from all of the chapters with a new reporting form that will greatly help facilitate future interaction among chapter members and between chapters and the IGS Council and the larger IGS membership.
As Cowland and Zornberg’s articles make clear, chapter involvement is vital, as is an active sharing of information about the work from those chapters.
Joanna Borkowska provides further support, as she announces the Polish Chapter of the IGS.
Also in the Issue
IGS Secretary Peter Stevenson gives a well-deserved nod to Masashi Kamon (Japan), Bernard Myles (United Kingdom), and Eun-Chul Shin (Korea), who have all become eligible for IGS Council Service Recognition.
IGS Awards nominees are being sought for achievements between 2006 and 2009. Those nominations are due by 30 September 2009.
Candidates are invited for the 2010-2014 terms of IGS President, Vice President, and IGS Council.
