DENVER, Colo. – On Monday, 27 February 2012, at the annual conference and expo of the International Erosion Control Association (IECA), the presentation ceremony for the Awards of Environmental Excellence was held. For the past 21 years, IECA has recognized the industry’s best by awarding persons and projects epitomizing the principles of environmental excellence.
The 2011 Environmental Achievement Award, IECA’s premier award, was presented to the Banora Point Upgrade Alliance. This award recognizes an outstanding erosion and/or sediment control project, program or system that demonstrates excellence in natural resource conservation and environmental protection. The Banora Point Upgrade Alliance is a team consisting of New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services, Abigroup Contractors, Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation and Seymour Whyte Constructions to upgrade the Pacific Highway at Banora Point. The Banora Point Upgrade Alliance was recognized for its environmental performance and innovative and cost-effective environmental solutions. “Since the beginning of the project, the Banora Point Upgrade Alliance has shown a high level of integrity towards environmental protection,” said Jenny Butler, Environmental Manager for the Banora Point Upgrade Alliance. “Winning this award is an outstanding accomplishment and we are delighted to accept the award on behalf of the project and Alliance partners. The Alliance has faced so many design and construction challenges, but the hard work being undertaken to address these issues has paid off.”
Tom Carpenter, CPESC, was awarded the 2011 Sustained Contributor Award. This award recognizes an IECA member who has provided distinguished service to IECA and has made outstanding contributions to improve the erosion and sediment control industry over a sustained period of time. Carpenter first joined IECA in 1996 and achieved his CPESC designation in 1998. Tom’s extensive involvement with IECA includes roles as a member of the Great Rivers Chapter Board of Directors, the IECA Board of Directors and member of the Save Our International Land (SOIL) Fund Committee.
The 2011 Contractor of the Year Award, which recognizes contractors who have demonstrated excellence in the execution and application of effective erosion and sediment control practices, was presented to Abigroup Contractors. Abigroup is a leading construction company with strong ethical standards and a reputation for performance. Established in 1961, they have since successfully completed hundreds of projects across a broad range of market sectors, and have accumulated a wealth of Building Construction experience throughout Australia.
Alaska Coastal Revegetation & Erosion Control Guide (ACRECG) was awarded the 2011 Educational Achievement Award. This award recognizes an outstanding training program, public program, university program of study, or tool used within the industry which demonstrates advancement in erosion and sediment control education based on experience and factual knowledge. The Alaska Coastal Revegetation & Erosion Control Guide (ACRECG) is an educational resource created to assist professionals involved in construction or cleanup activities in coastal areas of Alaska. The guide includes information on techniques for planting, wild harvest, and the protection of fragile coastal resources.
The Organization of the Year Award recognizes an organization that supports the erosion and sediment control industry. For 2011, the Township of Langley – ESC Program was recognized as the Organization of the Year. The Erosion and Sediment Control (ESC) Program and Bylaw were developed in response to the rapid development and increasingly stringent demands to protect water quality and fish habitat.
Gregory Ewanitz, CPESC, CESSWI, was presented with the 2011 Professional of the Year Award. This award recognizes an IECA member who practices as an erosion and sediment control professional and has made noteworthy and recognizable contributions to the erosion and sediment control. Ewanitz has worked in the environmental consulting, permitting and compliance industries for over 10 years has been an active member of IECA since 2007. Gregory’s involvement in IECA includes his role as Florida state representative for the Southeast Chapter and volunteering at IECA’s Environmental Connection 2011 in Orlando, FL.
Kent Stevenson was recognized with the 2011 Young Professional Award. This award recognizes an IECA member who is 30-years of age or less and has demonstrated excellence in their work in the industry and is viewed by his/her IECA peers as an emerging industry leader through significant engagement with the IECA. Stevenson has been involved with IECA and the Western Chapter since entering the erosion and sediment control profession five years ago. Kent serves as local IECA/Chapter ambassador, a committee position as the Chapter’s Contractor Liaison, and is the Western Chapter Representative on IECA’s Government Relations Committee.
The 2012 Most Distinguished Technical Paper Award was presented to two winners for their submissions for Environmental Connection 2012. Gerry Hester, PE, and Wesley Donald were awarded for their respective presentations “Riprap Channel Grade Control Design Methodologies in Stream Restoration” and “Auburn University’s Testing Facility for Evaluating Channelized Flow Sediment Control Practices.” This award recognizes the co-winners as having demonstrated excellence within the content of their Environmental Connection technical presentation.
Also recognized at the awards ceremony was Barry Fagan, PE/PLS, CPESC, winner of the 2011 Presenter of the Year Award for his presentation “The Five Pillars of Construction Stormwater Management Workshop” at Environmental Connection 2011 in Orlando.
