IGS North America Photo ContestThe International Geosynthetics Society’s North American Chapter has opened its 2017 IGS North America Photo Contest. The contest is open to all IGS-NA members and runs January 24 – February 20.
Entries in the IGS North America Photo Contest will be used to promote the ways in which geosynthetic materials, applications, and results improve infrastructures.
The announcement of the contest’s opening noted that first, second, and third place results will be announced on March 14 at the IGS North America general assembly, which is held as part of the Geotechnical Frontiers 2017 conference.
Geotechnical Frontiers 2017 takes place March 12 – 15 in Orlando, Florida.
“These photos will be used to promote the exemplary work of the geosynthetics community,” the IGS-NA wrote in its announcement. “[They will] raise awareness of the importance of your expertise and add to the beneficial dialogue between professionals and the larger engineering community.”

BIG YEAR FOR IGS NORTH AMERICA

While a number of IGS Chapters have held annual photo contests, IGS North America’s inaugural event is part of a large-scale change in activity for the group.
The chapter is in the middle of a substantial reinvigoration. It hosted the GeoAmericas 2016 conference in Miami in April, which was the biggest GeoAmericas quadrennial conference on record. IGS North America also officially adopted its new identity, having previously operated under the name North American Geosynthetics Society.  And, it established a new liaison position to better connect the Board of Directors with other key engineering societies.
Furthermore, IGS-NA’s long-time executive director Dave Suits retired from his role. IGS North America passed the management mantle to Minerva, the company which managed the GeoAmericas 2016 conference (and which also publishes Geosynthetica).
In 2017, the IGS North America Photo Contest is just one of many outreach measures the chapter is taking. New board member elections are wrapping up January 27. The group is planning webinars–following successful joint ventures such as a webinar with the National Concrete Masonry Association–a new Educate the Educators gathering is in the works, and it is evaluating future events opportunities and membership growth initiatives.
