International Geosynthetics Society5 April 2011 – The International Geosynthetics Society‘s (IGS) Technical Committee on Barrier Systems (TC-B) has established a task force aimed at collecting and summarizing field performance of barrier systems. This specific task is part of the TC-B terms of references for the period 2010-2014. To achieve this ambitious project, The TC-B seeks active participation from interested members of the Society’s chapters and their professional colleagues. The aim is to compile a review of field performance data-collecting and research projects related to all types of geosynthetic barrier systems. This will be followed by the creation of a single source database or report summarizing field-based studies for the benefit of the IGS membership, practitioners and researchers. The focus of this project is to gather solely field-based information on what is being or has been investigated. The TC-B is interested, for example, in collecting information on the size and scope of field studies using lysimeters, forensic studies, testing of exhumed materials and any other applications in which that research and publication of information may advance the industry.

This project will focus on manufactured geomembranes of ALL types–geomembranes of all polymeric types–geosynthetic clay liners and bituminous barriers. In-situ spray-applied membranes, however, are not being included at this time.

Your professional knowledge is requested. Please share this invitation with your colleagues. Interested participants should submit relevant project summaries to Kent von Maubeuge at kvmaubeuge@naue.com by 30 June 2011. All gathered information will be shared in future and as the project grows, updates will be announced. One forum will be a special section on the IGS website.

About the IGS Technical Committee on Barrier Systems

The International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) Technical Committee on Barrier Systems (TC-B) is dedicated to the scientific and engineering development of geosynthetic barrier systems and associated technologies. In particular, TC-B focuses on the dissemination of knowledge, technology, research findings, and design and construction methodologies related to barrier systems in geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering.
