ITA Geosynthetics Group celebrates 30th Anniversary ITA Geosynthetics Group celebrates 30th AnniversaryBy Bruno Pedroni – The Technological Institute of Aeronautics (ITA) is one of the most prestigious engineering institute’s in Brazil. The Institute’s geosynthetics group (GGGAITA) is celebrating its 30th anniversary. It marked the occasion during the 9th ITA geosynthetics group meeting with special sessions on September 16.
The gathering was hosted by ITA’s Faculty of Civil Engineering in São José dos Campos (Estate of São Paulo) and was attended by representatives of industry and current and former researchers from the institute.

ITA GEOSYNTHETICS GROUP PROGRAM

The morning session included 15 geosynthetics research presentations and featured work from Doctoral and Master’s students. The presentations were divided into four groups and question and answer time was reserved for each presenter.
The first group, coordinated by Professor Laura Borma (National Institute for Space Research [INPE]) related to hydrology:

  • “First Flush” by Roberto Gonçalves de Carvalho
  • “Climate Change and Adaptation Measures” by Maria Luiza Gandini Theophilus
  • “Climate Forecasts and Drainage Dimensioning” by Daniela Martins
  • “Urban Water Supply ” by Walter Manoel Mendes Filho

The second group, coordinated by Professor Paulo Hemsi, presented work on the containment and treatment of sludge and contaminated soils:

  • Rodrigo Alves presented research on “Filtration Assessment of Continuous Confinement Systems in Geotextiles”
  • Livia Avancini talked about his “Sludge Dewatering Study of Geotextile Bags in Water Treatment Plants”
  • Angelica Silva tried on his “Investigation of Geotechnical Behavior of WTS Mixtures and Hydrated Lime for Use in Landfill Daily Cover “

Professor Paul Brugger arranged for six presentations on soil reinforcement in the third group:

  • “Analysis of the Strengthening Effect on the Quality of Compacted Soil” by Jessica Oliveira
  • ” Different Analysis Methods to Evaluate Landfill Stability with Soils Enhanced by Geosynthetic Encased Columns” by Thiago Ordonho Araujo
  • “Analysis of the Influence of Geosynthetic Reinforcement Stiffness in Reinforced Soil Structures” by Keli Luana Rosa Bohrer
  • “Soil/Geosynthetic Interaction and Influence of Structural Characteristics of the Geogrid” by Talita Scussiato
  • “Research on Intervening degree of reinforcement by Geogrids in Performance Improvement and Preservation of Standard Permanent Way Ballast n. 24” by Gustavo Oran
  • “Soil-Strengthening Embankments on Interaction in Compressible Soil Multilayer Synthetic Reinforcement” by Marcus Guadagnn Moravian

Finally, two studies coordinated by Professor Paulo Ivo Queiroz addressed the issue Geosynthetic Durability:

  • “Durability of HDPE in biogas contention for roofing systems” by Patricia Yoshimura
  • “Geosynthetics Durability Estimation by Statistical Tools” by Mag Geisiely Guimarães

GOURC, VIDAL & INDUSTRY CONTRIBUTIONS

In the afternoon, the ITA geosynthetics group welcomed an international guest, one who is well-known to the field: Dr. Jean Pierre Gourc, professor emeritus at the University of Grenoble (France). He presented on “The Behavior of ‘Alive’ Earthworks with Geosynthetics after Several Decades.”
Supporting companies then took to the forefront and presented geosynthetics case studies. Demetrius Guimarães (Mexichem Bidim) talked about the case “Reinforced embankment SP 123 – A structure in Brazil with more than 30 years.” Flávio Montez and André Silva (HUESKER) presented on “Toll of Tamoios – A recent large reinforced soil structure.”
Professor Delma Vidal (Brazil) spoke on “Advances in Standardization and Recommendations”; consultant Indiara Giugni presented on “Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL) Applications in Mining”; Paul Hemsi talked about “Tests on Reactive Materials for Remediation of Contamination Plumes in Situ”; and Yukishigue Okasaki closed out the day on geosynthetics research and ITA with a special presentation on “30 years on the Path.”
