Making brownfields greener

Heartwood Place, which builds and manages affordable housing in the Waterloo, Ontario region. The former newspaper printing facility site, they discovered, had been graded years before with fill from foundries, which contained lead, among other contaminants. One of the solutions used to make this brownfields site viable for building on involved geotextile encapsulation of contaminated material.
