19 November 2010 – During the 31st German Geotechnical Society (DGGT) biennial "Baugrundtagung" conference (3-6 November 2010, Munich), one of the geosynthetics field’s most-respected colleagues was elected the new chairman of DGGT: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Georg Heerten. NAUE congratulates him on this honor.
In this new leadership role, Prof. Heerten succeeds Prof. Manfred Nussbaumer, who has provided outstanding guidance to DGGT over the past eight years. It’s no small task. The DGGT is one of the largest national geotechnical societies in the world, and its Baugrundtagung (German Geotechnical Conference) features strong participation from and dialogue between society members in both the technical sessions and the exhibit hall.
Prof. Heerten’s chairmanship comes at a very interesting time. As his four-year term begins, the society is planning after the 32nd Baugrundtagung in Mainz (2012) the co-location of its 33rd Baugrundtagung in Berlin (2014) with the 10th International Conference on Geosynthetics (10 ICG). The synergy of the international geosynthetics field with the DGGT’s geotechnical expertise bodes well for these professionals to learn from one another.
Also of importance, the DGGT invests heavily in developing and encouraging new engineers. Prof. Heerten has given much of his time to students at the University of Aachen, where he has long served as a lecturer. With DGGT he was also responsible for the “Young Engineers Forum” at the last four German Geotechnical Conferences, experiencing a growth from about 150 to 280 and now 400 participants in the Young Engineers Forum.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Heerten’s decades of experience, technical expertise, development and promotion of new technologies, and commitment to engineering education is an excellent fit for the DGGT and for following in the footsteps of Prof. Nussbaumer.
