Springfield, PA (PRWEB) 1 March 2012 – Since 1977, the time of the first geosynthetics conference in Paris, geosynthetics have emerged as exciting engineering materials in a wide array of civil engineering applications, e.g., transportation, geotechnical, geoenvironmental, hydraulics, and private development. To provide a deeper understanding of this subject matter, author Robert M. Koerner presents Designing with Geosynthetics – 6th Edition, which contains two volumes, released through Xlibris.
For those who are unfamiliar with the term, a geosynthetic is defined as a planar product manufactured from polymeric material used with soil, rock, earth, or other geotechnical engineering related material as an integral part of a human-made project, structure, or system. This definition is taken from ASTM D4439 on the Standard Terminology of Geosynthetics. In 1980, the first book on geosythetics was published, co-authored by Koerner. A much more quantitative book on the subject, the first edition of Designing With Geosynthetics, was published in 1986. With the robust growth of the technology and associated industry, regular updates were needed and resulted in subsequent editions.
In this sixth edition of Designing With Geosynthetics, the emphasis shifts from being an academic textbook to also being a professional users book. A number of changes have been implemented like the removal of many photographs and the chapter on geopipe, which can be found in the previous edition. New information has also been included such as the inclusion of sustainability in every chapter, data on geosynthetic field failures, and current literature references. With these modifications, this edition has become a user-friendly professional book that is focused on the credible use of geosynthetics in its major applications.
