23 November 2009 — After years of research and field observations, Agru America Inc. has developed and released ClosureTurf™, an innovative capping system that combines the outstanding barrier characteristics of structured geomembranes and the natural look and long-term exposure performance of today’s artificial turf.
ClosureTurf™ (www.closureturf.com) is ideal for the immediate closure operations and potential beneficial reuse of mining, industrial and municipal solid waste (MSW) burial sites. The ClosureTurf™ system addresses the standard problems found in conventional capping systems, such as timely installation, system and subgrade stability, surface erosion control, UV degradation and cost control.
Traditional cover systems require significantly more soil cover–which is both costly and, in the case of waste cells, reduces potential volume; thus, reduces profitability–and the longer vegetation takes to establish, the more likely it is that those caps will be stressed by soil erosion and the potential build-up of water. Eroding or poorly draining, saturated soils can cause cap failure.
The ClosureTurf™ system provides all of the long-term, engineered performance sought in traditional covers but without the risks associated slow construction time, costly thickness, or long-term maintenance issues. ClosureTurf™ is composed of an Agru 50-mil LLDPE Super GripNet geomembrane that creates an excellent, impermeable barrier. The structured spikes on the bottom side of Super GripNet provide outstanding frictional stability with the immediate soil cover while the studs on the top side of the membrane enable drainage so hydraulic heads will not undermine the cap’s integrity. A geotextile atop the geomembrane provides strong dimensional stability. And UV-resistant, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) synthetic grass blades provide an immediate, green look with the long-term, exposed performance for which these grasses have been engineered.
