Papers are invited for the Third Symposium on Current and Future Practices for the Testing of Multi-Component Geosynthetic Clay Liners, which will be held 29 June 2012, at the Sheraton San Diego in San Diego, Calif. Sponsored by ASTM International Committee D35 on Geosynthetics, the symposium will be held in conjunction with Committee D35’s June standards development meetings.

A major motivator for this new symposium is the advent of “multi-component GCLs.” These materials can be defined as a “GCL with an attached film, coating, or membrane that decreases the hydraulic conductivity or protects the clay core, or both.” It is now the task of D35’s Subcommittee D35.04 on Geosynthetic Clay Liners to identify the proper tests for these newer multi-component GCLs, either by adopting/modifying existing test methods or developing new procedures to help designers, owners, operators, regulators, manufacturers and other stakeholders test these materials.

The committee invites all interested authors to submit abstracts for the symposium. Topics include mechanical testing, peel and shear behavior, hydraulic testing, durability of multi-component, field performance and research studies.

To participate in the symposium, presenters/authors must submit and attach a 250-300 word preliminary abstract no later than November 7, 2011. The abstract must include a clear definition of the objective and approach of the work discussed, pointing out material that is new, and present sufficient details regarding results. The presentation and manuscript must not be of a commercial nature nor can it have been previously published. Symposium co-chairman Kent P. Von Maubeuge will notify you via email of your paper’s acceptability for presentation at the symposium.

Symposium presenters are required to submit their papers to the Selected Technical Paper (STP), an online and printed, peer-reviewed publication for the international scientific and engineering community. Manuscripts to be peer reviewed for the STP are due no later than June 15, 2012.
