Biogas - SMUDGeomembranes are used in many biogas projects, so if your company or a company in your project network has been involved in biogas development, you may be interested in this contracting opportunity: the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) in California is looking for qualified partners to help it develop and acquire biogas resources. This is not a formal request for proposals; rather, it is a request for statements of interest (SOI).

The preference is for long-term, sustainable development opportunities and competitively-priced agreements from within California. However, all development opportunities will be considered. Emphasis will be on larger projects with potential flowrates greater than 2 million SCF per day of raw biogas that justify biogas cleaning and transporting to pipeline.

SMUD is interested in long-term supplies of biogas that satisfy eligibility requirements of the California renewables portfolio standard (RPS) and for biomass-derived fuels under the California AB 32 cap and trade regulation.

SMUD has a strong history of incorporating renewable energy. It developed the world’s first commercial-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in 1984 and the original green power pricing program, Greenergy. Also, SMUD built the first solar-powered electric vehicle charging station in the western United States in 1992.

Recently, the district became the first large California utility to have at least 20% of its power come from renewable energy sources. The statewide goal is to achieve a level of 33% by 2020. SMUD is also targeting a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to just 10% of 1990 levels by 2050.
