13 June 2011 – The 6th International Mine Closure Conference (MC 2011) will be held 18-21 September 2011 at the Fairmont Chateau in Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada. This not-for-profit, annual conference is presented in various parts of the world by the Australian Centre for Geomechanics (ACG) and the Centre for Land Rehabilitation (CLR).

Suncor has generously agreed to partially sponsor a tour of reclaimed areas at their oil sands mine north of Fort McMurray. You are invited to walk onto Suncor’s first tailings pond, now fully reclaimed. This former fluid tailings containment is now fully trafficable.
This tour includes your flight to/from Calgary to Fort McMurray courtesy of Suncor.

Hosted by Environmental Leaders from both Teck Resources Ltd. (Teck) and Coal Valley Resources Inc. (CVRI) you will travel south from Hinton to Teck’s Cardinal River Operations, where you will view the Cheviot Mine, a producing metallurgical coal operation. You will then travel north to Cardinal River Operations’ Luscar Mine and the CVRI, Gregg River Mine, where significant reclamation activities post-mining are underway.
This tour will focus on land use planning with an emphasis on future opportunities for wildlife protection and public access.
Kimberley Underground Mining Railway and Sullivan Mine Tour

Hosted by Teck Resources Ltd. (Teck), you will travel from Lake Louise, Alberta to Kimberley, BC where you will spend the morning touring Kimberley’s famous Underground Mining Railway tourist attraction. You will then enjoy lunch followed by a tour of the Sullivan’s upper mine area and former mill site area which overlooks the reclaimed tailings impoundment area and ARD collection ponds.
All tours include transportation from/to Chateau Lake Louise as well as lunch and dinner.
